Port in Lodmundur fjord

Welcome to our page about the project:
NORTH POLE route ASIA - ICELAND - EUROPE - USA

Early 2011 I was asked to help with an idea to put up a port and or a big harbour on the east cost of Iceland which could serve as a transhipment port for goods from Asia that would be shipped over to the north pole to Europe and on to North America.
Global warming in the Arctic is now melting the ice at record speed, opening shipping lanes for cargo traffic and cutting journeys between Asia, Europe and America by as much as half. Now this route is open around 5 months every year with help from icebreakers. The North Pole may be completely ice-free in summer within a few decades.
Now, plans to build up a so-called post-Panamax ships which are specially built to break through ice. The size will be around 400-600m long and 50m wide and would need a harbour around 30m deep.
Now around 2500 files later and intensive work you can see the results on wwww.lodmundur.com
The first ideas were to put the port in fjord Reyðarfjördur and Finnafjördur. After a closer examination of this project I came up with the idea to use a fjord called Lodmundarfjörður. This placement is probably one of the best one you can find in north Europe for a harbour of this scale.
Best regards
